{"id":6,"date":"2024-02-21T07:31:39","date_gmt":"2024-02-21T07:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/joseeloyhortal.com\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2026-02-16T08:38:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T08:38:17","slug":"presentation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/joseeloyhortal.com\/","title":{"rendered":"Presentation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jos\u00e9 Eloy Hortal Mu\u00f1oz (Madrid, 1974), was\u00a0graduated in\u00a0<\/span>Early Modern and Modern History\u00a0(1997) and\u00a0History of Art\u00a0(1999) at the UAM.\u00a0After completing\u00a0doctoral studies at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen\u00a0(Netherlands), he\u00a0obtained\u00a0his\u00a0PhD in Early Modern History at UAM\u00a0in 2004, with the highest distinction, defending the dissertation\u00a0<i>El\u00a0manejo\u00a0de\u00a0los\u00a0asuntos\u00a0de\u00a0Flandes, 1585\u20131598<\/i>. He also holds a\u00a0master\u2019s degree in Archivists\u00a0from UNED. He is currently\u00a0Full\u00a0Professor\u00a0at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (Madrid), where he\u00a0works\u00a0since 2009.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His research focuses on the\u00a0political history of the\u00a0Habsburg\u00a0Netherlands in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries,\u00a0the courts of Brussels and Madrid, the\u00a0royal guards of the Spanish Habsburgs, and, most prominently in recent years,\u00a0the study of Royal Sites\u00a0and Geographies\u00a0in Europe\u00a0as political, social, and cultural spaces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He has been\u00a0visiting\u00a0researcher\u00a0at\u00a0numerous\u00a0international institutions, with a total of 24 months of research stays abroad. These include\u00a0PRIVACY (Denmark, Salvador de Madariaga Fellowship, 2022), the\u00a0Bodleian Library at Oxford (David Walker Memorial Fellowship, 2018),\u00a0Leiden University (NWO Visiting Grant, 2017), the\u00a0Universit\u00e9 de Li\u00e8ge and KU Leuven (FNRS Visiting Researcher, 2016),\u00a0Ghent University (Onderzoeksfondsen\u00a0UGent,\u00a02013 and 2015), and\u00a0The Graduate Center, CUNY (Research Project, New York, 2012).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He has recently conducted\u00a0research and collaborated on projects\u00a0at institutions such as\u00a0Universidad\u00a0Aut\u00f3noma\u00a0of Madrid, Ghent University,\u00a0Leiden University,\u00a0Utrecht University, University of Silesia in Katowice, York University and the Centre de recherche du ch\u00e2teau de Versailles. He has\u00a0organized and co-organized\u00a0numerous\u00a0international conferences\u00a0in Spain, France,\u00a0England, or the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His major works include the monographs <em>Las guardas reales de los Austrias hispanos<\/em> (Madrid, 2013); and (with Gijs Versteegen),<em> Las ideas pol\u00edticas y sociales en la Edad Moderna<\/em> (Madrid, 2016). He has also edited <em>Politics and Piety at the Royal Sites of the Spanish Monarchy in the Seventeenth Century<\/em> (Turnhout, 2021); and coedited (with Ren\u00e9 Vermeir and Dries Raeymaekers), <em>A Constellation of Courts: The Households of Habsburg Europe, 1555-1665<\/em> (Leuven, 2014); (with \u00c1frica Esp\u00edldora Garc\u00eda and Pierre-Fran\u00e7ois Pirlet), <em>El ceremonial en la Corte de Bruselas del siglo XVII. Los manuscritos de Francisco Alonso Lozano<\/em> (Brussels, 2016), which was awarded the Henry Pirenne Prize in 2019; and (with Merlijn Hurx), <em>Building the Presence of the Prince: The Institutions Responsible for the Construction and Management of the Buildings of European Courts (14th-17th Centuries) <\/em>(Turnhout, 2024). As well, h<span data-contrast=\"auto\">e has <\/span>published widely in leading international journals, including\u00a0<i>The Court Historian, e-Spania, <em>Mediaevalia Historica Bohemica<\/em>, <em>Studia Historica.
